Winter Car Wash Machine: Anti-Freeze Measures to Prevent Cold-Weather Damage

In cold regions, when winter temperatures drop below freezing, car wash water lines, pumps, valves, and other components are prone to damage from ice formation. This article provides a detailed guide on effective anti-freeze measures to help operators stay safe through the winter.

In winter, automatic car washes in northern regions and high-altitude areas face severe cold challenges. When water freezes below 0°C, its volume expands by approximately 9%, which can crack pipes and damage pumps. Implementing scientific anti-freeze measures is essential to ensure equipment safety throughout the winter.

Drain and refill method

The most effective way to prevent freezing is to drain all water from the equipment. Before extended shutdowns (e.g., overnight or holidays), open all drain valves and use compressed air to purge the lines, ensuring no residual moisture remains. This method is suitable for indoor equipment with insulation or outdoor equipment undergoing short-term shutdowns.

Electric heat tracing insulation method

For pipelines that cannot be fully drained, install electric heat tracing wrapped with insulation. Self-regulating heat tracing maintains water temperature above freezing. Ensure proper power matching of the heat tracing and correct thermostat settings to prevent overheating and pipe damage. This method is suitable for outdoor equipment operating year-round.

Add Coolant Method

Add a suitable amount of propylene glycol-based antifreeze to the wash water to lower its freezing point. Typically, adding it at a ratio of 5%-10% reduces the freezing point to between -5°C and -10°C. Do not use ethylene glycol-based antifreeze, as it is toxic and may contaminate vehicles. This method works best as a supplementary measure alongside other solutions.

Equipment room insulation

Install core components such as water pumps and control cabinets in a well-insulated equipment room, maintaining an indoor temperature above 5°C. Equip the room with heaters or warm air blowers, and regularly check door and window seals. A controlled indoor environment significantly reduces the impact of external low temperatures on equipment.

We recommend a comprehensive anti-freeze inspection and an emergency response plan before winter arrives. The Kaimelong Technical Support team can provide on-site guidance to ensure your equipment safely withstands the cold season.
